The romantic opera, which has been one of the most important works in the German-speaking world since its premiere in 1821, will be given a spectacular new interpretation in summer 2024. Under the musical direction of Enrique Mazzola and the visionary staging by Philipp Stölzl, "Der Freischütz" promises to be an unforgettable experience on the lake stage. The story of the young clerk Max, who enters into a dark pact in a hopeless situation, is brought to life by the unique backdrop of Lake Bodensee and the technical marvels of the stage design. Immerse yourself in a world in which love, despair and tradition come together against a breathtaking natural backdrop and experience an evening of opera that is second to none.
Venues at the Bregenz Festival
The lake stage
Since the first festival in 1946, the lake stage has become the landmark of the Bregenz Festival. With a capacity of around 7,000 spectators and a history ranging from Mozart's "Bastien and Bastienne" to contemporary opera productions, this venue offers a unique opera experience right on the water. The lake stage is not only the setting for the annual "Play on the Lake", but has also made film history as the backdrop for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace".
Theatre at the Kornmarkt
The Theater at the Kornmarkt, traditionally used for theatre and operetta performances, is experiencing a renaissance under the directorship of Elisabeth Sobotka. With a focus on opera performances and a promising young ensemble of singers, the theatre offers a cultural experience that is as intimate as it is impressive.
Workshop theatre: Laboratory of creativity
The Workshop theatre, a platform for contemporary music theatre and modern drama, stands for experimental and innovative productions. The approximately 1,000 m² stage also serves as a rehearsal room and event venue outside of the festival season.
